So you have got your laptop or computer home and subscribed to broadband. The next question you have is: "What do i need to hook up a wireless router?"

OK - what do you need to hook up a wireless router?

Well, lets assume that you have a wireless router which has just been posted to you be your broadband provider. Look inside the box and you will find three important components;

  1. Broadband Router ( cable [ DSL] or ADSL )
  2. Router Power Supply. This will supply power from your household electrical supply to the low voltage DC required by your Broadband Router.
  3. Filter ( microfilter for ADSL ) or Splitter ( DSL ).

Now to hook up your wireless router. Plug the router into your broadband enabled phone line using the filter or splitter, you should also have an RJ11 cable to connect the router to the filter in the box. Plug the router power supply into the router then into your household electrical supply and switch on the power.

You will need to wait for the wireless router to perform its power on cycle.

If you have already configured your wireless router or your broadband provider has already pre-configured it for you then you do not need to do anything else in order to hook up to your wireless router. Simply power on your laptop ensuring that your wireless functionality is enabled and then select the connect to wireless network option. You may need to type in a wireless password or key to hook up to your wireless router.

If your wireless router is not yet configured or has not been pre-configured by your broadband provider then in order to hook up to your wireless router you must first configure it. Your provider should have send you some instructions to do this or you may have a setup disk ( CD ) in the wireless router box, take a look for this and put the setup disk into your computer and follow the instructions. Once you have completed the setup process then you will be able to hook up to your wireless router.
