VPOP3 SMTP Error 550 Not Allowed when Sending with BT Internet

Posted by: who last updated this on October 15, 2011

If you are trying to configure VPOP3 and when connecting to send email you receive a ‘SMTP send failure Error 550 not allowed’ its a simple fix. This happens when your ISP is BT Internet ( also reported as happening with other ISP’s too… ).

-> VPOP3 Homepage.

The reason is that the SMTP server is trying to stop unauthorised relaying.

Ensure that you have set SMTP authentication with a valid pop3 login is the first thing to check. Also ensure that the SMTP server is mail.btconnect.com

However even with SMTP authentication setup correctly you may still receive an error 550 not allowed if your ISP is BT Internet, BT Connect or one of the other SMTP servers that particular host uses.

If you set the SMTP to send mail direct by performing MX record lookups then the mail is sent correctly, however this can be slower than using your ISP to relay messages.

It seems that some ISP perform a basic check that the mail is coming from the account which they have authenticated so you need to setup vpop3 to supply the email address that can be authenticated.

In the SMTP server advanced configuration setting in VPOP3 you should change the send as option to always set to the address’ and in the address box enter the email address so it is the same one with which you are authenticating, these settings are in the SMTP Return Address Modifiers section. If you had a bt email address then in here you would enter ‘your-bt-email-address@btconnect.com

Save the changes using the button in the top right and try to send an email. ( webmail -> New Mail -> Send -> Status -> Connect Now and you will see that the message is sent.

That is it, problem solved. It looks like in addition to the authentication the bt mail server also checks the mail is reporting to be from the authenticated address.
