A friend contacted me saying he had been trying since christmas day to get his sony playstation 3 online. After nearly 3 weeks and trying everything he had given up and called me.
Getting a sony PS3 connected to the internet should be a very easy process, in fact there is even an easy option in the Internet Settings menu.
Even after all the correct wireless details for the netgear router were entered the PS3 would not connect.
After a bit of digging there was a known problem with Netgear DG834G series routers and PS3 such that Netgear issued a firmware update which fixed the problem.
The current netgear firmware is on version 4.x.x but the post office issued Netgear DG834GSP V3 is on version 1.03.06.
Dont try updating the firmware of the post office netgear DG834GSP V3 with the firmware on Netgears website for the DG834G V3 as the post office supplied Netgear is firmware locked.
You can mess around unlocking the router in order to upgrade the firmware but thats quite a job for a home user.
If you change the wireless security to WEP and set a WEP key then you will find the Sony PS3 will connect without any problems.
WEP is perhaps not the best security there is but it works. If you want to use WPA/WPA2 security then your options are:
1. Change ISP and get a new router.
2. Complain to post office and ask for a v5 router.
3. Buy your own router.
4. Hack the router to update the firmware.
I hope this gets you straight to the problem and gets you online!
