Firstly there’s no need to panic.
If you have seen MSOffice/altreq.asp in your log files this is not a hack attempt of a sign of malicious activity against your website or webserver. We saw this entry in our web logs and decided to investigate, its always good practice for webmasters to follow up on suspicious entries.
In this case the entry MSOffice/cltreq.asp turns out to be related to Microsoft Office which has a feature called Discuss in Office 2003 ( the discussion bar ). When this is clicked on by the user Internet Explorer tries to provide options for discussing the document. The idea was for users to comment on documents clicking Discuss on the options toolbar which in theory is great but not applicable on standard webservers. This featureset is generally used under sharepoint services.
