ie4uinit.exe entry point not found

Posted by: who last updated this on October 15, 2011

Typically this message is seen when booting into windows before the desktop is shown and usually after installing internet explorer 8 on a Windows XP Home or Professional computer.

We have seen this also after installing a major service pack such as Windows XP Service Pack 3.

Sometimes after the message has been shown attempts to start internet explorer 8 result in a crash of internet explorer caused by urlmon.dll.

The full text of the error message shown below is, ie4uinit.exe – entry point not found, The procedure entry point RunSetupCommandW could not be located in the dynamic link library ADVPACK.dll.

ie4uinit.exe error message stating that the entry point has not been found.
Typically all that you need to do is to ok the error message. A second one usually appears. Run windows update and install any remaining updates then restart the computer and all should be well. If you are in a position where internet explorer 8 will not start and keep crashing asking to send an error report then download internet explorer 8 from another computer and copy onto the affected machine using a USB stick. Run the setup file and this should fix the problem of internet explorer 8 not starting. Remember to run windows update and install any remaining updates followed by a reboot.
