My phone buzzed, "James, will you take a look at my laptop for me?"
An advent 7109 laptop. This advent laptop is now a mature product, having an intel celeron M410 cpu running at 1.46GHz with 1GB ram and a 60GB hard drive running Windows XP Media Centre Edition.
Pressing the power button made the power led illuminate but no fans, hard drive spin up or any other signs of life. The most probable cause of this laptop’s failure was a motherboard failure.
The user had their recent lifes work on the hard drive. Could the data be recoved from the laptop hard drive. Providing the hard drive itself was not the cause of the failure and it was undamaged then yes. Quite often these failed laptops have taken to having a quick drink of some kind of liquid prior to failure – a fact often omitted from the explanation.
A quick inspection revealed this one was dry and so the chances were still good at this stage that the data could be recoved from the hard disk drive within the advent 7109 chassis.
The hard drive is accessed from the underside. Two screws secure the hard drive cover. Remove the cover and the caddy securing screw. Once the hard drive is removed in its caddy four screws secure the hard drive in the caddy. The hard drive fitted to this particular advent was a hitachi 60gb SATA.
The hard drive was placed in the usb external sata docking station ( a great accessory to have waiting and ready ) and powered on. The hitachi hard drive could be heard spinning up. So far so good.
With the hard drive recognised on the host it was a simple 20 minute operation to copy the associated data from the user’s folder and burn on to a DVD ROM. Job done and data recovered quickly and easily.
