If you are on BT Broadband and you think your connection is a little SLOW then follow this guide which explains how to check your line speed.
First you will need a working computer that is connected to your bt home hub or broadband router.
Ensure that you have JAVA Run Time environment installed. If you get an error message when trying to run the test stating the test cannot be run as you do not have java then dont worry – you can get java for free. If you need java then in your web browser click here to get java runtime environment and click the Download JRE button. Follow the instructions from there, dont worry its safe.
So to conduct the speed test in your web browser go to http://speedtester.bt.com/ and if you have java installed then you will see a prompt to click yes to agree to the test and enter your phone number. You might also see reference to an ID number – dont worry about this, you only need click yes and enter your phone number. The next button will conduct the test. While the test is running be patient, it will take 5 minutes or so. If you see the progress bar stop moving then again, resist the urge to mess with it, just leave it be until the test has completed.
At the end of the test you will see two bars, one for download speed and one for upload speed. The results will also show the maximum speeds you should be experiencing. If the bars are full or near full then your download speed and upload speed are at their maximum. If the bars are low then you need to take action to find the problem. The first step would be to ring BT Broadband support and speak to one of theri advisors to see if there is a line problem.
You will only be able to run a speed test once every hour.
