Windows firewall is the default protection that comes with your Windows operating system to start protecting your computer from the first time you switch it on. It stops malware before it starts infecting your computer. Windows firewall blocks hackers from entering and tampering with your computer, to stop hackers Windows firewall blocks ports on your computer.
To enable your windows firewall you need to access the Windows firewall manager to locate this simply click on Start->Control Panel->Windows Firewall you will then be faced with a dialogue box as displayed below.
Here you can also turn off your Windows firewall, you may want to do this if you have bought or downloaded a firewall. If you still have Windows firewall enabled when you run your new firewall as they may conflict with each other.
If you select the Exceptions tab on Windows firewall manager it will bring up a list of programs installed on your computer, if the tick box next to a program has been ticked it means Windows firewall is allowing that program to access an outside source such as the Internet if Windows firewall is Enabled. To add a program to this list simply click the Add Program button under the list of programs and follow the steps.
If you click on the Advanced tab in Windows firewall manager it will have a list of connections, these are what your computer use to connect to the Internet if you untick any of the connections Windows firewall will stop that connection from Internet access. This only applies if Windows firewall is enabled.
