So you have forgotten your windows password and need to recover it. Most modern laptops are shipping with SATA hard drives making it more difficult to use password recovery tools such as NT_PASS on austrumi and locksmith on erd commander.
However there may be a glimmer of hope...
Some modern sony laptops ( and laptops from other manufacturers ) now ship with fingerprint readers and users usually set these up so that they can scan their finger and log on to Windows. The problem comes when they need their password for some reason and can't remember it. Creating a emergency password reset disk at this stage is too late as in order to create the disk you must know the password. Even to bypass or reset the windows password so that no password is needed you will be asked the current password. This is a security measure as if you left your laptop unattended then your windows password could be reset or changed without you knowing by someone wanting to access your computer or even someone playing a joke at your expense.
The software sony uses to integrate the fingerprint reader with Windows Vista ( on the laptop we saw ) was called Protector Suite Software and if its been setup you can recover the password from this software.
How to recover your Windows Vista logon password -> Start -> Programs -> Protector Suite -> Fingerprints -> Enroll or Edit -> Next -> Reveal Password. Then you scan one of your registered fingers (this will prevent others from obtaining your password from an unattended laptop) and you will then be presented with the password that is needed for your account on the Windows Vista operating system.
