Netgear Wireless Signal Booster

You may have found that your Netgear router signal just does not reach all parts of your home or office and needs to be boosted.
Sometimes a simple solution can implemented without you needing to purchase any additional hardware and done in less than 5 minutes so is worth a try before you buy any signal boosters.
Take a look at where your router is placed. Is it next to or near a desktop computer case or dect cordless phone? By near, we mean about 1 metre. Metal will attenuate the signal being emitted by your netgear wireless router. DECT cordless phones operate on the same frequency as wireless and can cause interference. If this is the case move your netgear wireless router so it is more than 1 metre away from your computer case or DECT cordless phone. Once you have done this then see if your wireless enabled laptop or computer can now access your netgear router.
If you find that the signal is low and needs to be boosted and you have checked the netgear wireless router placement, as above, then you need to boost the signal.
There are a couple of approaches to signal boost.
One involves fitting an increased gain or directional ariel to your netgear wireless router. However, usually it is only the high end Netgear routers which have detachable ariels. Take a look at the back of the Netgear router if you have an external ariel that can be screwed off then this option is available to you. The general signal pattern being emitted from the arial can be thought of as a 'doughnut' shape. By replacing the ariel with one of a higher gain will allow the signal to travel further. If you use a directional ariel then this can be 'pointed' in the direction which you need the signal boosted.
If your router does not have a detachable ariel then you still have the option of using a wireless repeater. These devices receive and then re-transmit the wireless signal from your router. They are sometimes called wireless range extenders. You will setup the repeater or range extender around the halfway point between the netgear router and your wireless laptop, computer or device. Once you have configured the repeater or range extender simply plug in to the mains and thats all there is to it. When purchasing ensure that it will be compatible with your particular router.
