When people mention a cross over cable to connect two computers together via their USB ports they are often attempting to transfer files between the two computers. Usually this is when a new computer has been purchased and files need to be transferred from the old computer to the new computer.
Now while this task can be accomplished using a crossover network cable connecting two computers together via their network port, often older computers may not have a network interface stopping them from being networked together. One solution may be if one of the computers does not have a network interface then a USB network adapter could be used and the two then connected via a network cross over cable.
While USB A to USB A cables can be purchased striclty speaking they are not suitable for connecting two computers together for the purposes of transferring data. The device that is required is a USB to USB adapter or Bridge which is a gadget that has a USB cable coming out of each side with a USB A connector on the end of the cable.
One manufacturer of the piece of kit needed is Belkin which they call, Easy Transfer Cable for Windows Vista. The belkin part number is F5U258ea. Its very easy to use. Pop the driver/transfer cd into the old computer and follow the on screen instructions, when prompted plug the cable into the two computers and choose the files you want to transfer.
