James I said to myself, this speedtouch modem supplied by BE has got to go. I purchased a brand new Belkin N+ Wireless Modem Router. One reason was the continuous lockups experienced by the old router but the main one was to use the Wireless N facilities offered by the Belkin F5D8635 N+ router.
After refusing the kind offer of a store card from the retail outlet and purchasing on a debit card, even though the card was clearly visible and a short wait I was on my way home with the new box of tricks.
After putting in the settings to get it online I could see webpages.
I now wanted to improve the router security.
So I turned off UPNP, enabled the wireless security using WPA2/AES settings and then I wanted to change the default admin password.
Every time I tried ( click the system settings link in the control panel ) entering just my new password and the confirmation of the new password the router responded with "old admin password is wrong".

Eh? how can the old password be wrong. It clearly stated that the default password is blank. I even proceeded through an authentication screen to get to the system settings page in the first place where a blank password was used.
Next step was to upgrade the router firmware. So in the control panel, under firmware update, I click on the Check Firmware button, no update is available.
Off to the belkin website, enter my model number and I find that a firmware is available V1.00.23. So I download the firmware binary file from the belkin website and browse to the file and click the update button. A minute or so later I can access the router again, the firmware shows that it has been updated.
I try again to set a new admin password for the router control panel but I receive the same message, old admin password is wrong. After a short while of searching on a popular search engine I cannot find any matches to this problem so I search the support area on belkins website with no matches.
I then contact belkin via their live support facility. To their credit the support person was there promptly and we went through the problem, where it was acknowledged that there is a problem in the router firmware. The transcript is as follows, names have been blanked.
N*: Hi, my name is N*. How may I help you?
N*: Hi
James: Hi N*
James: I cannot change the admin password
James: the router ships with no password
James: so I follow the steps to change this
James: ( leaving the old password field blank )
N*: Not to worry. I will definitely help you with the issue.
James: fill in the new password and confirm password fields
James: the router says "old admin password is wrong"
James: mm
James: no
James: F5D8635uk4A
N*: Ok
N*: We have found a problem with the F5D8635 N+ Modem-Router where the System password on the router cannot be changed. When you try to do so, the router will come up with a message that the old password is invalid.
This can be caused by having more than 4 MAC Addresses entered under MAC Address Control. Even when MAC Address Control itself is switched off, more than 4 Addresses in the list may prevent the password from being changed.
This problem is related to the one where the router interface hangs when logging into it or when trying to open the Wireless Security or Wi-Fi Protected Setup pages.
The problem is reported and logged to be fixed in a future firmware update.
James: ok
James: I thought it might be a firmware issue
James: for your records - I do not have MAC Address control on.
James: and there are no addresses in the list
James: so basically sit tight and wait for a firmware update then?
N*: Yes, there is a bug in the firmware, I will give you the link to update the firmware to the router.
N*: Link: http://en-uk-support.belkin.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2785
N*:
Save the file on the computer.
- To update the firmware, log on to the router's web interface by typing in http://192.168.2.1 in the address bar of the browser. The computer should be connected to the router with an ethernet cable.
Note: If you have changed your Router’s IP address, use that IP address.
- By default, the password is blank. Click the "Submit" button.
- Click on "Firmware Upgrade" under the option "Utilities".
- Click on “Browse” and select the bin file that you have downloaded.
- Click on “update” and follow the wizard.
- After updating the firmware, restore the router to factory defaults by clicking on "Restore Factory Defaults" under "Utilities".
- Reconfigure the router.
N*: Do you have steps to configure the router?
James: I will be ok configuring the router. N*, does this version 1.00.25 solve this password issue?
N*: Yes, I am 100% sure.
James: excellent!
So I downloaded the new firmware - 1.00.25 and updated it. Thought about ways to make money for a couple of minutes until the firmware update was applied to the belkin f5d8635 router and checked that the firmware had been updated to V 1.00.25 which it had.
Attempted to change the password to get the same message - old admin password is wrong. GRRRRRRRR
For sure this is a firmware issue to the only thing to do now is to sit tight and await a new firmware release.
